Have been using Alive Studios quite a few times now, their drawback is the waiting times for transfers some cases going into months, they have the best cine and video tape scanners in the country and results are stunning, there comms are very good and always kept up to date. They need to look at logistics to win more business.

You emailed me to say that my videos were available to view online but there was only the HD version visible. I emailed you on the same day questioning where the 4K version is and why would I want to pay extra just to store the HD version.
You have not replied and chosen to ignore my email.

I am not impressed with the AI 4K version as it still has vertical lines in it. This is something of a surprise as the 16mm cine film I sent you had not been projected.
For what you charged, I expected more.

Thank you for your feedback. We are committed to providing the best possible service and take all reviews seriously. I’d like to address the concerns you raised to offer some clarity.

Firstly, regarding the hosting of your videos on Alive Cloud, please note that our service offers high-definition (HD) streaming. We do not currently offer 4K streaming on our platform.
This is consistent with many industry standards. For example, the BBC streamed this year’s Euros and the ongoing Olympics in HD, not 4K. This is on both their TV channel and their iPlayer streaming platform.

Our film scanning service provides 4K transfers, but these are delivered via USB stick or hard drive. We have never advertised or promised 4K streaming on Alive Cloud, and we apologise for any confusion.

Secondly, it's important to mention that you have used our free 14-day hosting service. Hosting on Alive Cloud is an optional service at £24/year, but you have not paid for this.

Regarding the vertical lines you mention in the finished video, our records show that the 16mm cine film you provided had visible wear and tear, including deep scratches from previous projections. Contrary to your claim, the film has clearly been projected multiple times in the past. As a railway preservation society, it’s possible that the person who donated the film provided incorrect information. We can assure you that the deep vertical scratches on the left-hand side are the result of extensive past use, not our digitisation process.

We understand that you may have been misinformed about the film’s history, but it’s important to clarify that these scratches were pre-existing. Our team meticulously cleaned and scanned the film in 4K, employed advanced AI remastering, and restored the audio to high quality. We have provided a side-by-side comparison of the raw scan Vs the finished product for you. This comparison clearly demonstrates that the vertical lines are due to projector damage, not our digitisation process.

Here’s a summary of what was included in your service:

- Hand-cleaning of the 400-foot reel of 16mm film.
- 4K scanning and AI remastering on a scene-by-scene basis.
- Separate capture and restoration of the optical soundtrack.
- Synchronisation of the audio with the video.
- Delivery of the final product in Ultra HD on a memory stick and ProRes files on a hard drive.
- A copy of the film prior to AI re-mastering.
- Next day premium courier service for collection and return delivery of the parcel.

This comprehensive service was provided for £198.96 plus VAT. We believe this represents excellent value given the detailed and intensive work involved.

If you find another provider who can deliver a superior quality transfer from the same film, we would be more than happy to offer a full refund upon evidence of this.
